CARDIOHOM 09 - GLIMPSES

Since past 5 years, The National Academy of Homoeopathy, India has conducted biannual workshops in the memory of Late Prof. Dr. J.N.Kanjilal of Kolkatta. The Central Secretariat (Nagpur) decided that the theme for Academy’s tenth 2 Day workshop would be Homoeopathy in Cardiology. The venue was “Centa Rosa Resort” in the pristine hills of Solan. It was also a tribute to Late Dr. Manoharlalji Suri who was a devout homoeopath and had pioneered the first homoeopathic clinic in the state of Himachal Pradesh. This was first of its kind workshop dedicated exclusively to cardiac disorders and homoeopathy and the credit for organizing goes solely to Dr. Vinod Suri. Dr. Rajeev Bindal (Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. Himachal Pradesh); Dr. Ajay Sharma (Dept of AYUSH) and Dr.Rajiv Bharadwaj (Professor of Cardiology, IGMC, Shimla) graced the inauguration ceremony.
At the outset, Dr. Jai Kukreja (Gwalior) paid tributes to Late Dr. J.N.Kanjilal while Dr. Pravesh Agrawal (Palwal) outlined the various theme based workshops organized by the Academy in the past.
On the first day, Prof. Dr. Kasim Chimthanawala lucidly spoke on the evolution of cardiac Sickness from the stage of tendency to disease ultimate with an exhaustive miasmatic understanding. The theory of Case Types, Cardiac Symptom types and special emphasis of the role of Tubercular Miasm in Heart diseases were the highlights of his oration. He also explained the approach to be adopted in management of various heart disorders.
The key speaker was Dr. Aadil Chimthanawala (Homoeopathic Cardiologist). He covered the entire gamut of cardiovascular disorders right from Ischemic Heart Disease (Angina to SE Infarct), Rheumatic & Congenital Heart Diseases, Congestive Cardiac Failure and Arrhythmias.
While speaking on Cardiac Rehabilitation by homoeopaths, he said that it is a medically supervised individualized program designed to improve the quality of life in terms of physical, mental, spiritual & social functioning after a cardiac event. Its final goal is to stabilize, slow & reverse the progression of CVS disease, there by reducing the possibilities of another cardiac event or early death. He emphasized that rehabilitation should be started as soon as the patient is medically stable. The steps that he outlined were -
1. Detailed history should taken as soon as the patient registers.
2. Initially, palliative homoeopathic medicines are used. Once settled then the patient is prepared to receive Constitutional Homoeopathic treatment.
3. Counseling of the patient & care takers should be done so that they can understand how homoeopathy can help them to manage the disease process and the patient.
4. Individualized structured exercise program should be charted out. Diet planning, modification of maintaining factors, information on physical & sexual limitations and finally a proper feedback for deciding the correctness of the 1st and 2nd prescriptions, potency selection and auxiliary measures should be told.
About 18 detailed & documented cases with video angiographies, 2D Echo & ECG’s and video interviews were presented. In his deliberation on Rheumatic Heart Diseases, he said that the Jones Criteria should not be used as a substitute for sound medical judgement. Vaccinations excite RHD and under homoeopathic management, Penidura can safely be withdrawn. He also described the ESRA & PBGH Protocols that are clinically verified by the Academy in the management of Angina pectoris and Acute Myocardial Infarction.
Prof. Dr. Sagira Chimthanawala spoke on “Managing Heart Diseases in Pregnancy”. She cited her experiences by presenting cases of RHD in Pregnancy managed by Silicea, PIH with recurrent abortions managed with Syphilinum, VSD complicated by hyper-emesis in primae gravida (Tabacum) and various facets of Natrum Muraticum in a pregnant female. She said that at her center heart disease complicated 0.4% of all pregnancies and it increased the risks of adverse maternal & fetal outcome. Hypertension & Rheumatic heart disease are still the most common CVS diseases complicating pregnancy in India. She highlighted the protocols that the Academy uses in managing PIH, Abortions, Hyperemesis & Urinary Tract Infection during pregnancy.
Dr. Fatema Chimthanawala conducted the entire 2 Day program. Mr. Vaibhav Gupta (Puranjay Travels) had arranged an exhilarating tour of Shimla, Naldhera, Sadhupul, Mashobra, Chail and other scenic places for all the participants after the workshop.
